UniFi OS Server vs Network Application
Ubiquiti now gives you two ways to run the software that manages your UniFi network. Here's the plain-English difference and how to choose.
The UniFi Network Application (the classic controller)
This is the original UniFi controller software. It manages UniFi Network only — your access points, switches, gateways, VLANs and Wi-Fi — and it runs on Windows, macOS, Linux or Docker. It's also the software that lives inside a Cloud Key or a Dream Machine. Self-contained and familiar, and for a lot of networks it's all you'll ever need.
UniFi OS Server (the newer platform)
UniFi OS Server is software you install on your own x86 server or virtual machine to bring UniFi OS — and multiple UniFi apps — to hardware that isn't a Ubiquiti appliance. One UniFi OS Server can run Network, Protect (cameras), Access (door control) and Talk (phones) side by side, with built-in Remote Access through unifi.ui.com and the UniFi mobile app.
The key differences
- Apps: Network Application = UniFi Network only. OS Server = Network + Protect + Access + Talk.
- Where it runs: Network Application runs almost anywhere (Windows/macOS/Linux/Docker/Cloud Key). OS Server runs on your own x86 server or VM.
- Remote access: OS Server has built-in Remote Access via unifi.ui.com; a standalone Network Application you reach directly (or via your host's URL).
- Best for: Network-only or migrating an existing site → Network Application. New, all-in-one deployments → OS Server.
Which one should you choose?
For most new deployments — especially if you want cameras, door access or phones alongside your network — UniFi OS Server is the better fit. If you only run UniFi Network, or you're moving an existing controller and want the least change, the Network Application is perfectly good. You're not locked in either way. Either platform can be hosted and managed for you on a private, always-on controller.
Quick answers
Is UniFi OS Server replacing the Network Application?
No. UniFi OS Server is a newer way to run UniFi OS and multiple apps on your own server, but the standalone Network Application is still supported and widely used — especially for Network-only setups and existing sites.
Can one UniFi OS Server run Protect, Access and Talk?
Yes. That's a main advantage of UniFi OS Server — it can run UniFi Network, Protect, Access and Talk together on one system.
Can you host either one for me?
Yes. We host both UniFi OS Server and the classic Network Application on a private, managed controller, starting at $5/mo.
